In celebration of the International Internal Auditing Awareness Month, the Institute of Internal Auditors FEU Student Chapter (IIASC-FEU) and the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants – National Capital Region (NFJPIA – NCR), in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank, the Institute of Internal Auditors Philippines, R.G. Manabat & Co., and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, inaugurated the “Internal Auditing Youth Summit 2016” last May 7 at the Asian Development Bank Auditorium. The event was attended by 200 select delegates from universities all over the Philippines.

The event opened with a prayer lead by Rolliette Santos, President of the IIASC-FEU ’16-’17, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Mr. Calixto Seroje Jr. from the Office of the Auditor General of ADB presented his opening remarks, conveying the mission and vision of the Bank, and introducing the “3 Words of Wisdom” from experienced internal audit practitioners in multilateral financial institutions.

As the first keynote speaker, Ms. Mei Kok from the Asian Development Bank began the session by discussing the Sustainable Development Goals to the young audience. She talked of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development to end poverty, promote shared prosperity, and support sustainable development for everyone. She further discussed how the youth could help in achieving this set of goals.

Mr. Lance Hogar, co-adviser of the NFJPIA-NCR, followed with an inspirational talk for the delegates. He emphasized the key role of “stickability” in the road to success. He also shared eight habits that make millennials stressed, anxious, and unproductive. He ended his spiel with the advice that whatever happens, at the end of the day, “Ang mahalaga, bumangon ka.”

To ease the audience into the technical discussions of the Summit, Ayala Corporation’s Chief Audit Executive Ms. Catherine Hufana Ang talked about the best practices of Internal Auditing in local and international setting based on her profound experiences.

The second part of the event was divided into various breakout sessions. Session A by Mr. Mario Demarillas, Board of Trustee of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiner Philippines and Information Systems Audit and Control Association Manila Chapter, held a lecture regarding “Fraud Audit”. Session B by Pilar Teves, Senior Manager of the Enterprise Risk Services of Navarro Amper & Co. was an exposition of “Risk-Based Internal Audit”. Session C by Raymond Reglos, Manager of the Advisory Services of Reyes Tacandong & Co. talked of “Cybersecurity”. Session D by Ms. Vera Christy Mangundayao, Assistant Manager of the Advisory Department of R.G Manabat & Co., discussed the “Role of Internal Auditing in Corporate Governance”.

To reinforce the learnings of the audience, breakout sessions were followed by activities such as quiz bees, case analyses, and games.

After the breakout sessions, sponsors of the Summit were given the opportunity to address the delagates. Finally, special awards were given to delegates and partner organizations for their exceptional contribution to the realization of the event.

The Internal Auditing Youth Summit concluded with closing remarks by Princess Abigail Eslava, IA Youth Summit 2016 Project Proponent and former President of the IIASC-FEU ’15-’16.
